> A Giant Dog
https://agiantdog.bandcamp.com/

Austin's A Giant Dog, formed in 2008, is raucous ear candy culled from the hook-driven melodies of Slade, the glammy swagger of Marc Bolan, the morbid fantasy of Killer-era Alice Cooper, and the unpredictable wit of Sparks. Sabrina and Andrew’s lyrics, equal parts brutally honest, clever, and debased, have a knack for taking their idiosyncratic depravities and making them feel universal. These songs are by, for, and about the losers, freaks, and outcasts. The lonely. The terminally horny. Boozehounds and party animals. No band better speaks to the hearts of slackers, burnouts, rockers, sluts, and creeps everywhere than A Giant Dog.

AGD have built their reputation blowing the goddamned doors off every venue in Austin. Live, they are loud, heavy, electrifying. Sabrina struts around the stage like Iggy Pop channeling Tina Turner. Andrew hurls himself from the summit of the speaker stack. Graham’s headbanging clobbers anything close to him. The audience rages, asses shake, and everyone leaves drenched in beer and bodily fluids.

> FOOLS
https://soundcloud.com/FoolsmusicATX

RECORD RELEASE:
After a year-and-a-half of anticipation, the freshman album from Austin-based Punk/Power Pop group FOOLS is here. Though only known as “Ø,” the minimalism in its title does not reflect the deep, sonic layers that fill this fast-paced ode to midwestern anxiety — Scotty May (Bass) grew up outside Detroit; Jacob Miguel (vocals) and Chris Goranson (guitar) outside Chicago. There's a grit, an authenticity, an anxious tension in the rock music from the rust belt with arguably the best punk heritage anywhere. Take a group of guys who spent 30 years of 6-month winters cultivating their musical tastes and then drop them in Austin, TX, and you get FOOLS.

Methodical picking patterns and piercing-clean guitar tones drive dark melodic chord changes that invoke more modern bands like Jay Reatard, Fidlar, and Radioactivity. It’s loud, fast, riff-centric rock with punk-sneer and pop-sensibility that makes people want to dance. “The drive to make this type of music comes from wanting people to let loose when they hear it. I always think about how people are going to move when they hear the song. It’s all about the party you create,” said Goranson. With a reputation for rowdy, energetic live shows, fans and band members alike had questioned if this enrapturing spectacle could ever be captured properly on tape. Now that question has been answered, and it’s up to the public to decide if it holds its weight.

FOOLS completed their new album with the help of producer/engineer, Danny Listrom (Street Themes/The Bravo) and producer, Andrew Cashen (Sweet Spirit/A Giant Dog). The roisterous live sound was captured at Permanent Youth Recording in East Austin, TX.

> Xetas
https://xetas.bandcamp.com/

The most dangerous letter in the DIY Greek alphabet, XETAS are greeting 2017 with their sophomore album and spring tour, serious as a heart attack and more fun than the drugs they give you in the hospital after the medics bring you back to life.

Pumping through Austin's clogged Red River arteries since 2014, the Austin firebrands have temporarily broken their vows of Shaolin silence with ten tracks of unadulterated defibrillation --an electrifying monument to distorted melody and verbal hooks brought to a full boil.

Recorded over a 24-hour period in the fall of 2016 with engineer Ian Rundell (Carl Sagan's Skate Shoes, Spray Paint, Empty Markets), the 37-minute, 10-track album was recorded in less than than 7 minutes --a testimony to the band's energy and capacity for bending time and space after years of monastic devotion.

The melodies are dirty, distorted and delicious, dishing on the world in a jolting and at times unnerving manner, speaking truth to power, assuring a nation already grappling with insomnia under new federal management that it never sleeps again, in soundman Max's jacket, or otherwise.

> Lola Tried
https://lolatried.bandcamp.com/

Forming in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2015, Lola Tried began as a project started by local singer/songwriter Lauren Burton. After meeting Ray Garza (Lead Guitar, Keys) in August 2015, she decided to form a full band project, adding Ray Flynt on drums and Greg Spencer on bass. Taking influence from the likes of Swearin' and Lemuria, Lola Tried blends melodic vocals with the grittiness of modern indie rock. After spending the summer in the studio, Lola Tried released "Popsicle Queen" in February 2017.

> Flesh Lights
https://fleshlights.bandcamp.com/

Flesh Lights are an Austin, TX, punk trio. Guitarist/vocalist Max Vandever and cousin Elissa Ussery (drums/vocals) migrated from San Antonio and began their assault on Austin’s live music dumps in 2008 playing as a duo under ill-advised names including but not limited to Candle Shop & The Psychic Reader, Dead Ledger and Carousel Images. After poaching bassist/vocalist Jeremy Steen from an early lineup of The Gospel Truth, the newly dubbed Flesh Lights (Google at your own risk) quickly became a fixture on whatever you-got-songs-in-my-punk / you-got-punk-in-my-songs circuit that began to coalesce around the live music capital. Early on, Flesh Lights established themselves as being songcraft devotees without much self-consciousness. Writing almost completely on the spot, their recordings are a fresh surprise even to the members. The only thing better than their music? Their incredibly energetic live shows.

> Trouble Boys
https://troubleboys.bandcamp.com/

Austin-based trio Trouble Boys charge full-on with a sound that’s all about the debauchery of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s pretty clear-cut: Jimmy Wildcat, Erich Jaymes and bad boy Benny Trouble stir up all the insanity that rock, punk and power pop have to offer and friggin’ run with it. If you’re not having fun with these guys, you must not have a pulse. Not for the faint of heart, but that’s the kind of jolt you need, pal.

Earlier this month, the Boys released their new EP, Trouble Boys 2, on cassette and digitally. But for their upcoming tour, they’ll have a new 7-inch vinyl release to take along with them, featuring two tracks off the EP, “My Own Way” and a cover of a tune originally done by The Rubinoos, “Rock N Roll Is Dead.”

> Pretty Shitty
https://prettyshittysucks.bandcamp.com/

"Looking pretty and sounding shitty deep in the heart of Texas!"

The first thing that grabs your attention is the band;s name. It seems to be a perfect, succinct description of the times. And the times call for loud, in-your-face agitators like Pretty Shitty. The next thing you notice is the energy, with vocalist Moses leading the charge in theatricality. The one-named wonder is a performing spectacle, drawing the audience in with passion for the music that borderlines on mania.

Austin Jukebox with Martin Rev, The Hentchmen, Heavy Times, Elisa Ambrogio

Austin Jukebox in partnership with The SIMS Foundation proudly presents:

> Martin Rev [NY] - A keyboardist of considerable musical output, Martin Rev is perhaps most known for his work with protopunk act Suicide and post-punk side project The Sisterhood (with Sisters of Mercy mainstay Andrew Eldritch). Martin released a new solo album in May 2017, Demolition 9, which he describes as an autobiographical yearning for joy and the unattainable perfection of the artistic idea.

> The Hentchmen [MI] - Formed in 1992 in Detroit, The Hentchmen are a garage punk band who have enjoyed a cult-like following since their early days. "The Hentch", as they're also known, have toured the US many times over and recorded with Jack White before the White Stripes came into existence.

> Heavy Times [IL] - Chicago-based Heavy Times are a self-described psychic punk quartet originally on HoZac Records. Formed around 2009, the group have three albums to their name and most recently released an EP in 2016, Black Sunglasses.

> Elisa Ambrogio [MA] - Frontwoman of noise rock group Magik Markers, Elisa Ambrogio embarked on her solo career in 2014 with critically-lauded album The Immoralist. Musically the polar opposite of Magik Markers, Elisa's solo efforts are more pop driven with heart-wrenching lyrics.

Hush Machine is the blissful, glassy guitar pop of Kansas-born Sam Boatright, a 21 year-old Lawrence native who has created music under this moniker for several years; however, he has only just recently started sharing his music with a grander listening audience. The songs on his self-titled debut album were all written and recorded during Boatright’s junior and senior year of high school in 2013 and echo winter nights driving around lonesome as well as muggy summer days, lounging around with friends. Musically, the sound is not unlike the first Strokes record - that is, catchy and gritty and poppy and memorable, but without a single ounce of pretense. A promising start for this young musician!

JEFFREY LEWIS & Los Bolts (NYC, Rough Trade Records)
BIO:
Acclaimed indie-rock songwriter Jeffrey Lewis began recording homemade cassettes at home in New York City in 1998, before coming to the attention of Rough Trade Records (venerable label of The Smiths, The Strokes, Belle & Sebastian, Arcade Fire, etc.) and releasing his first album on Rough Trade in 2001. Now with seven official albums on Rough Trade, and a number of additional self-releases and side-projects (on labels like Don Giovanni and K Records), Jeffrey Lewis and his various bandmates have toured the world and developed a devoted following from Los Angeles to London, Melbourne to Moscow, Chicago to Shanghai and beyond. Jeffrey's career has also included sharing bills and tours with The Vaselines, The Fall, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Roky Erickson, The Mountain Goats, Daniel Johnston, Pulp and other luminaries. In addition to mixing contemplative folk narratives and garage indie-punk songs, Jeffrey is also a comic book writer/artist and includes his own illustrations in concert to accompany certain songs (like "The History of Communism" or "The Creeping Brain"). The current band incarnation Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts features Mem (Cat Tatt, Fem Doms) Pahl on bass and Brent (Moldy Peaches, Candy Boys) Cole on drums; their most recent official album "Manhattan" was released on Rough Trade in Nov 2015.

12XU XXXMas: Xetas, USA/Mexico, Borzoi, Exhalents, Rocket 808

Formerly Austin's 17th or 18th most popular independent label, 12XU celebrates a 2017 campaign that saw it slip into 39th place with the imprint's annual FREE holiday show at the happiest-place-on-earth, Beerland. Please bring a can of food for Central Texas Food Bank and all of your previous transgressions will be forgiven*

At least one high profile publication saw fit to recognize the "brain-scrambling...sonic muck" on USA/Mexico's debut LP, 'Laredo'. And that's supposed to be a good review! The internet is a seriously tough town.

Xetas' 2nd album, 'The Tower', won widespread acclaim, they completed a pair of national tours and yet they're still playing a free show FOR SCRAPS OF FOOD at year's end. Somebody's screwing up royally (and I think that someone is you).

Borzoi began the year as one of the label's brightest hopes but by the time December rolled around, one local scribe accused them of being "too weird for their own good" and fuck if that doesn't sound like an epitaph for James Franco. Don't know about you, but I can't wait to see how these guys get off the mat.

Exhalants feature persons you know and love from (NAME REDACTED) and have pretty much blown everyone away that's been lucky enough to catch their first several shows. What's the likelihood they've already peaked? YOU CAN'T HAVE A BACKLASH WITHOUT A FRONTLASH FIRST

Rocket 808 is John Schooley aka John Schooley on guitar accompanied by drum machine. You can expect a brutal collision of the raw (though not as raw as if we started a fire by rubbing two sticks together) and the modern (though not as modern as a smartphone app that fires your bandmates for you)

your DJ's for the evening are the returning John Vomitnose and new-to-this-particular fray, Katherine Strickland.
