Lydia Lunch Retrovirus: An all-star cast of sonic brutarians in a no-holds-barred survey of her musical output from 1977 to the present, including music from Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8 Eyed Spy, Queen of Siam, 1313, and Shotgun Wedding:

Lydia Lunch has spent decades trolling through the sub/terranean sick-home black and blues creating a schizophrenic musical legacy which loops from shrill No Wave to bludgeoning Hard Rock, from smoky Jazz Noir and illustrated word to macabre Psychedelia.

Weasel Walter is best known as the founder of the cult punk jazz/no wave/brutal prog band, The Flying Luttenbachers. Mr. Walter has also worked with other experimental rock groups like XBXRX, Behold The Arctopus, Burmese and Lake Of Dracula. As an improviser, Mr. Walter has performed with Evan Parker, Marshall Allen, Elliott Sharp, Peter Evans, Henry Kaiser, Mary Halvorson, Nels Cline, Jim O'Rourke and Vinny Golia.

Bob Bert has pounded the skins for Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Knoxville Girls, fronted his own group Bewitched and has provided a unique rocking voodoo backbeat on over 30 albums. A stint in print making at Warhol's Factory helped inspire him to create the highly lauded music, art and literary magazine BB GUN.

Tim Dahl is a composer and professional electric and double bass player, vocalist, keyboardist and composer living in New York City. He is best known as the front man and bass player of the noise-rock band Child Abuse and the defunct avant-jazz group The Hub. He also writes and performs for the jazz ensemble Pulverize The Sound. Dahl has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan, and performed with many notable musicians, composers and performers including Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Elliot Sharpe, Tatsuya Yoshida and Stanley Jordan.

Belcurve
https://belcurve.bandcamp.com
Belcurve is the melding of Sarah Castro’s unique brand of lyrics, vocal range, and melodies with Matt Parmenter’s (producer) lifelong mission to wring the strangest sounds out of even stranger gear and studio toys. This is glued together by Michael Peters’ rhythms, which range from restrained and soft to all out muscular assaults. Deidre Gott adds a layer of clear, resonant harmonies and sonic landscapes, and Blue Mongeon’s versatile guitar work adds sweetness, power, and depth. Alternating seamlessly between catchy pop tunes and haunting melodic rock, Belcurve is a slightly bent framework of talented human beings creating songs that will you make you feel at once pleasant, strange, and feisty.

Austin Jukebox #13: Lyres, Oneida, The Ugly Beats, Semihelix

Austin Jukebox in partnership with The SIMS Foundation proudly presents:

> Lyres [MA] - Boston-based garage rock band that rose from the ashes of punk outfit DMZ in the late 70s, Lyres are known for their high energy, trash-rock sound, led by singer and organist Jeff Conolly. Drawing on influences from early proto-punk and the British Invasion, Lyres craft a gritty and catchy sound that can't be missed!

> Oneida [NY] - Oneida are an experimental rock band hailing from Brooklyn whose sound revolves around repetitious elements and relies on antique keyboards and analog electric pianos. Currently signed to Joyful Noise Recordings, Oneida released their twelfth studio album, Romance, in March of this year.

> The Ugly Beats [ATX] - Formed in 2003, The Ugly Beats have been serving up their brand of 60s-influenced garage rock from here in Austin. The band released their fourth album, Brand New Day, in 2014 on Get Hip Recordings and are set to release their fifth record soon.

> Semihelix [ATX] ) - Austin-based dream pop/psych 90’s fuzz and delay collaboration originally formed in 2013, with melodic yet loud sounds including influences of My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, The Pixies, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Sebadoh, and Black Tambourine. “I’m somewhere between Fleetwood Mac and Jesus Lizard”-Joe Pannenbacker, bassist. Geannie Friedman-vox/guitar, Joe Pannenbacker-bass, and Valdemar Barrera-drums.

This is the thirteenth show of the quarterly series, Austin Jukebox; with the goal of bringing together acts from different genres that are interesting, weird and/or cool, the aim of the series is to provide an experience that is unique, refreshing and something to talk about.

The SIMS Foundation started in 1995 in memory of local musician Sims Ellison to provide access and financial support for mental health and addiction recovery services to Austin music industry professionals and their families.

Special thanks to our sponsor, Crosspick Studio!

Crosspick Studio is an up and coming small recording studio based in Austin, TX. Crosspick will provide a welcoming and empowering studio experience for any band/musician, regardless of prior recording experience, and wants to work especially closely with members of the queer community, women, and people of color (however any band/musician is welcome to record at the studio, even if they do not directly fall into one of those categories).

The Young Mothers, Little Mazarn, Food Group

9.18.18corrected.jpg

The Young Mothers return to Beerland, Texas on Tuesday, 18 September — since their appearance earlier this year at Austin Jukebox #11 and the release of their sophomore album Morose (out now on Self Sabotage Records), they have toured Europe & Canada.

Joining them are the psychedelic Food Group and dream folk Little Mazarn.

• The Young Mothers •
https://www.theyoungmothers.com
"[O]n stage they appear like a gang I would not buy a used car from. But they act like a star team together. There is energy that is at the forefront of the music, both in Taylor's rap & pocket-trumpet games, Horne's guitar games, Gonzalez's vibraphone games and the entire package. [...] This band, with Håker Flaten's piss, as the whole concert through [he is] fighting an intense battle with both the electric and acoustic bass, became exactly what such a festival needed as a finishing touch. Tougher and more energetic jazz in close relation to indie rock, free improvisation and groove-based music, [something] you simply do not get in today's musical landscape." – from review of The Young Mothers live at Nattjazz 2018 by Salt peanuts

• Food Group •
https://foodgroup.bandcamp.com
"Austin psych-rock explorers Food Group blend genres and incorporate acoustic sounds to make reflective experimental music. Formed in 2013, the band consists of singer & guitarist Eric Lyday, keyboardist Wiley Greene, bassist Luis Rangel, and drummer Jeff Olson — with a rotating group of friends that provide additional instrumentation and fill in every now and then. Food Group’s sound has evolved since their early single-microphone demos, incorporating elements of chamber pop, folk & electronic music. Their more recent efforts have been sonically darker & more progressive while still touching on the themes of love, loss & spirituality that are present in their earlier work. " – Harold Urteaga, KUTX 98.9

• Little Mazarn •
https://www.littlemazarn.net
"[A] linchpin to a number of local bands, [...] it wasn't until 2015 when she began performing her own songs at the encouragement of fellow alternative folk artists Ethan Azarian and Ralph White. Little Mazarn's eponymous EP last December captured the quiet, personal pull of Verrill's songwriting, opening meditative expanses in the patient space between her banjo and [Jeff] Johnston's saw." – Doug Freeman, Austin Chronicle

> Body/Head [MA] - Body/Head is the experimental guitar project of Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth, Free Kitten, Harry Crews, + more) and Bill Nace (an experimental/improv guitarist who has worked with numerous musicians and groups, including Thurston Moore, Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, James Twig Harper, + more). Formed officially in early 2012 (though they began working together in 2011), Body/Head released their first album, Coming Apart (Matador Records), in 2013, their second album, No Waves (Matador), in late 2016, and will release their third album, The Switch (Matador), on July 13th. This is currently their only Texas date and will be their first performance in Austin.

> The Austerity Program [NY] - The Austerity Program is a noise rock/alt metal duo that formed in NYC in 1997. Formed by Thad Calabrese and Justin Foley initially as Polonium in the mid-90s, the group's sound centers around the use of a drum machine. The Austerity Program released two EPs and a full length album on Hydra Head before creating their own label, Controlled Burn, to release their second album, Beyond Calculation (2014). The album would be selected by Rolling Stone Magazine for their 20 Best Metal Albums of 2014 list.

> USA/Mexico [ATX] - USA/Mexico are an Austin-based noise rock trio consisting of guitarist Craig Clouse (of Shit & Shine), drummer King Coffey (of Butthole Surfers), and bassist Nate Cross (of Marriage). The group released their debut album, Laredo (12XU/Riot Season), in June of last year.

> exhalants [ATX] - exhalants are a new noise rock trio based in Austin. Led by Steve Pike (Carl Sagan's Skate Shoes) and rounded out by Thomas Rabon (Body Pressure, Innards) and Bill Indelicato (Oozer), the band self-released their demo tape, democore, last October and are currently preparing their forthcoming debut album.

This is the twelfth show of the quarterly series, Austin Jukebox; with the goal of bringing together acts from different genres that are interesting, weird and/or cool, the aim of the series is to provide an experience that is unique, refreshing and something to talk about.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND!
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND

MonkeyWrench Books is a local infoshop & community space that has been a hub for Austin radicals since 2002. Our new lease comes up in January 2019. We're faced with the ultimatum of becoming financially stable, or being forced to close our doors for good, probably to make way for a new vintage store.

To help us stick around for the long-term, we are asking for community support. We are already at 1/3 our goal of making rent through small monthly donations. Help us reach another milestone in our goal! Show up to chat with MW volunteers about the work we do, our sustainer donations, and volunteering!

Get pumped because this event will feature a lot of cool stuff, such as...
- Raffle including neat wares, a Beerland Skate Deck, jewelry, gift card from End of an Ear, and more!
- DJ JEVA
- Thank you bundles for anyone who becomes a sustainer donor, which includes a card for 5 - 20% off MW purchases, a tshirt, rad buttons and zines, and art prints from incarcerated folks!
- Karaoke (with Lizzy Caroloke), Clothing swap, and rad vendors!

MWB is driven by volunteer power and a passion for sharing ideas that push for social change. Your support helps us continue this work through providing a queer and trans friendly community space, organizing and event space, expanding the library with new books and zines, coordinating with other radical projects, and much more.

This event is 18+, $5 cover
