Community Roundtable Sessions #1

An Examination Of the Complex World Surrounding Depression, Suicide & Related Issues

April 22, at Beerland, Texas
Doors 7:00pm
Event 7:30pm
18+
Free

The 1st in a new quarterly series bringing together a small group of talented and experienced people to discuss in a roundtable format a topic that not only affects our community, but perhaps is either not understood enough by many or not discussed openly enough for significant improvement to be made in that particular area or topic.

This roundtable discussion will be an examination of depression, suicide, and the various resulting ripple effects that often accompany these complex issues. We’ll have a Q&A after the roundtable with the audience that allows for serious, yet calm and thoughtful discussion and exchange of ideas, in an environment that is low stress and welcoming to all.

We are very fortunate to have Dr. Kimberly Arlinghaus, Patsy Dolan, and Thor Harris as the roundtable participants for this Session:

Dr. Kimberly Arlinghaus is a psychiatrist practicing in Cedar Park (cedarparkpsychiatry.com). Her career spans 30+ years in general adult psychiatry as a physician, teacher, researcher, and administrator. She is a staunch mental health advocate, stamping out stigma by sharing her own personal journey through trauma and depression as well as encouraging people to seek help in order to live healthier and happier lives.

Patsy Dolan Bouressa is the Clinical Director of the SIMS Foundation. In her career as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, she has worked in a variety of settings with individuals of all ages dealing with mental health and substance use issues. Patsy is active in the community, serving on a variety of committees, in an effort to de-stigmatize these issues and to help create a better system to serve those in need.

Thor Harris is a name many in the music world will recognize as an accomplished musician playing with bands such as Swans, Thor & Friends, Xiuxiu, Bill Callahan, Shearwater, and others. But he is also known far and wide for his work helping people facing depression and other mental illness. He’s especially qualified to take part in this event because not only does he help people with these issues, but he has chronicled his own struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts in a graphic novel “Ocean of Despair “ as well as a short film on The Mental Health Channel. Thor is a shining example of someone that has been able to face his own issues and inspire others and literally save lives through his work.

This and other upcoming Sessions in the series are meant to be open and welcoming to anyone in the community that wants to attend, not just our local music community.

Whether you’ve been personally affected by these issues or would just like to learn more about them and how they can affect people we know and love and the community at large, we hope that you’ll join us. Our goal is to not place blame on anyone or project morality views on to others, but rather to attempt to bring these complex subjects more into the public forum because they are still considered taboo to a large degree in many quarters.

We think and hope that discussion about serious topics like this in a more comfortable setting will at least help to begin a discussion that could help individuals, as well as overall, discover ways to begin to better understand and confront these issues in our community.

About the NCTE:
The National Center for Transgender Equality was founded in 2003 by transgender activists who recognized the urgent need for policy change to advance transgender equality. With a committed board of directors, a volunteer staff of one, and donated office space, we set out to accomplish what no one had yet done: provide a powerful transgender advocacy presence in Washington, D.C.
Today, NCTE has grown to a staff of over 20 and works at the local, state, and federal levels to change laws, policies and society.

Austin Jukebox #14: Eugene Chadbourne & Friends

54520781_2111949398918526_2238306396535783424_n.jpg

Austin Jukebox & Epistrophy Arts, in partnership with The SIMS Foundation, proudly present a special edition of Jukebox featuring legendary underground guitarist/banjoist Eugene Chadbourne.

Part of the idea behind Jukebox, besides fun, is discovery and what better collaborator than Epistrophy Arts? For over twenty years, PG Moreno & his cultural organization have been bringing amazing forward-thinking music. We are very excited to showcase this fresh take on Austin Jukebox — and we are positive you will love it!

Eugene Chadbourne – or Doc Chad, as he prefers – is known as a jazz or avant-garde guitarist & banjo player but that would be underselling him. Over his 40+ years of performing, Doc Chad has cultivated a truly idiosyncratic & unique place in American music. His solo career began with acoustic guitar explorations in the spirits & veins of jazz giants Anthony Braxton & Derek Bailey, leading to early collaborations with John Zorn & Henry Kaiser. His continued explorations & collaborations are legion — highlights include fronting Shockabilly; inventing the electric rake; a one-off collab with Camper Van Beethoven called Camper Van Chadbourne; his LSD C&W.
http://eugenechadbourne.com

Doc Chad will be performing an extended solo set bookended by two groups that he will be joining for some songs as well.

Beginning the evening will be TX greats Ralph White & Walter Daniels. Ralph & Walt have played together over the years and are accomplished storied musicians in their own right. Daniels was part of the Doug Sahm tribute in 2000, The Texas Sessions, with Eugene Chadbourne, trombonist David Dove and pedal steel player Susan Alcorn.

The latter part of the eve brings us bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, saxophonist/flutist Alex Coke and drummer/percussionist Stefan Gonzalez. Ingebrigt recently received the Buddy Award, one of his native Norway's highest honors in the arts, from the Norwegian Jazz Federation. Alex, a native Texan & Austin favorite, spent the 90s with the Dutch ensemble Willem Breuker Kollektief, returned at the turn of the century dividing his time between contients. Stefan is best known for his work with his family's bands Yells at Eels (with brother Aaron Gonzalez & father Dennis Gonzalez) and Akkolyte (with his brother) as well as his solo performances as Orgullo Primitivo. Ingebrigt & Stefan play together in the jazz/metal/hip hop supergroup The Young Mothers.

This is the fourteenth show of the quarterly series, Austin Jukebox; with the goal of bringing together acts from different genres that are interesting, weird and/or cool, the aim of the series is to provide an experience that is unique, refreshing and something to talk about.

Epistrophy Arts is a grass-roots cultural organization dedicated to presenting the finest in adventurous and improvised music in Austin, Texas. Since January of 1998, they have presented over 100 concerts with living legends, unsung heroes and rising talents in the field of adventurous music from around the world.

The SIMS Foundation started in 1995 in memory of local musician Sims Ellison to provide access and financial support for mental health and addiction recovery services to Austin music industry professionals and their families.

Special thanks to our sponsor, Crosspick Studio!
Crosspick Studio is an up and coming small recording studio based in Austin, TX. Crosspick will provide a welcoming and empowering studio experience for any band/musician, regardless of prior recording experience, and wants to work especially closely with members of the queer community, women, and people of color (however any band/musician is welcome to record at the studio, even if they do not directly fall into one of those categories).
