Austin Jukebox #14: Eugene Chadbourne & Friends

Austin Jukebox & Epistrophy Arts, in partnership with The SIMS Foundation, proudly present a special edition of Jukebox featuring legendary underground guitarist/banjoist Eugene Chadbourne.

Part of the idea behind Jukebox, besides fun, is discovery and what better collaborator than Epistrophy Arts? For over twenty years, PG Moreno & his cultural organization have been bringing amazing forward-thinking music. We are very excited to showcase this fresh take on Austin Jukebox — and we are positive you will love it!

Eugene Chadbourne – or Doc Chad, as he prefers – is known as a jazz or avant-garde guitarist & banjo player but that would be underselling him. Over his 40+ years of performing, Doc Chad has cultivated a truly idiosyncratic & unique place in American music. His solo career began with acoustic guitar explorations in the spirits & veins of jazz giants Anthony Braxton & Derek Bailey, leading to early collaborations with John Zorn & Henry Kaiser. His continued explorations & collaborations are legion — highlights include fronting Shockabilly; inventing the electric rake; a one-off collab with Camper Van Beethoven called Camper Van Chadbourne; his LSD C&W.

Doc Chad will be performing an extended solo set bookended by two groups that he will be joining for some songs as well.

Beginning the evening will be TX greats Ralph White & Walter Daniels. Ralph & Walt have played together over the years and are accomplished storied musicians in their own right. Daniels was part of the Doug Sahm tribute in 2000, The Texas Sessions, with Eugene Chadbourne, trombonist David Dove and pedal steel player Susan Alcorn.

The latter part of the eve brings us bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, saxophonist/flutist Alex Coke and drummer/percussionist Stefan Gonzalez. Ingebrigt recently received the Buddy Award, one of his native Norway's highest honors in the arts, from the Norwegian Jazz Federation. Alex, a native Texan & Austin favorite, spent the 90s with the Dutch ensemble Willem Breuker Kollektief, returned at the turn of the century dividing his time between contients. Stefan is best known for his work with his family's bands Yells at Eels (with brother Aaron Gonzalez & father Dennis Gonzalez) and Akkolyte (with his brother) as well as his solo performances as Orgullo Primitivo. Ingebrigt & Stefan play together in the jazz/metal/hip hop supergroup The Young Mothers.

Plus DJ Katherine Strickland and DJ Self Sabotage on the decks between sets!
